The HDT/VSP tester is designed keeping in mind the IS 2530-1963 standards.

The heat distortion temperature of the polymer in the test is identified as the 'heat distortion temperature' (HDT) or 'deflection temperature under load' (DTUL).

Like all materials, the properties of plastic also depend on temperature. This is of particular importance for mechanically stressed parts that are exposed to high temperatures during use. As a result, the heat dissipation property of plastic materials becomes extremely important for any manufacturer and has become an essential tool for engineering, product design and product manufacturing.

During its testing the plastic specimen is placed flat or bent in a three-point bend in the edge direction along the dimensions. Plastic Sampling Direction Depending on the standard used, ISO or ASTM, composite testing is a very important task in manufacturing a product which significantly affects the quality of our product. Thus, special care should be taken to load the specimen in the correct position as per the relevant standard of heat deflection temperature – HDT/VSP tester.

The fiber stress applied for the test is either 1.82 MPa and or 0.455 MPa, and the temperature is increased at a rate of 2 °C/min to deflect the specimen 0.25 mm (for ASTM). As a result, the deflection temperature at which the plastic specimen is deflected 0.25 mm is the same as the material deflection temperature. Due to the significantly different standards (ISO and ASTM), it is important to mention not only the applied stress but also the standard and HDT value used.
