In the Asian Water Absorption Tester, a test piece of leather is wetted on a surface, and pressed and folded like the sole of a leather shoe while walking to determine penetration time, water transmission and water absorption.

The Asian Water Proofness Tester consists of a fixed and fine platform for sole leather, the upper surface of which is covered with a strip of cotton gauze, the platform having holes in it which are kept moist by the slow flow of distilled water. A brass roller is provided along the length of the platform to move in horizontal direction with the help of gearbox, motor and crank mechanism present. The roller is mounted on a ball bearing so that its axis is horizontal and perpendicular to the direction of motion of the roller. The test piece of leather is placed tightly to one end of the sample on the platform. The other end of the sample is held tight to the roller. The constant reciprocating motion of the roller gives the effect of repeatedly bending and straightening the specimen and at the same time the roller exerts a constant load on the specimen beneath it. With the help of springs attached to the roller, the leather sample is kept taut during movement. An electronic device is also provided to indicate the entry of water through the sample which is used to give an audio-visual signal. All its components that come in contact with water are made of aluminum or brass to protect the equipment from corrosion. Other parts are decorated with bright chrome enamel or plated to give a highly aesthetic appearance to the instrument.
